Gerade in letzter Zeit wird in Deutschland viel über Israel geredet und geschrieben. Auf der einen Seite kämpft Israel mit den Auswirkungen einer 2. Pandemiewelle. Nicht wenige Israelis gehen auf die Straße, um gegen die Regierung und für mehr und effizientere – und vor allem finanzielle – Unterstützung ihrer Existenzen zu demonstrieren. Nahezu zeitgleich wird in Deutschland über einen sog. „offenen Brief“ an die Bundeskanzlerin diskutiert. Darin wollen „besorgte deutsche und israelische Bürgerinnen und Bürger“ ihrer Sorge über die drohende „Annexion palästinensischer Gebiete durch Israel sowie dem inflationären, sachlich unbegründeten und gesetzlich unfundierten Gebrauch des Antisemitismus-Begriffs, der auf die Unterdrückung legitimer Kritik an der israelischen Regierung zielt“, Ausdruck verleihen.
Zu diesen und anderen Themen wollen wir einen israelischen Experten zu Wort kommen lassen: Dan Schueftan ist vielen von uns bereits bekannt; er ist unter anderem Direktor des Zentrums für Nationale Sicherheitsfragen an der Universität Haifa und Berater der israelischen Regierung.

In a series of four zoom lectures, Dan Schueftan will provide a tour d’horizon of Israel’s challenges and opportunities. He will be discussing the political, social and security issues that trouble Israel, while it is facing, at the same time, the pandemic, a major economic crisis, Iranian threats and Palestinian challenges concerning the “Peace Process”. The first lecture will deal with the all-important issues concerning the Israeli society, its major features, its strengths and its vulnerabilities. He will highlight the distinction between the malfunctioning and divisive political system, on the one hand, and the essential resilience and solidarity of the society on the other. The second lecture will discuss Israel’s security, focusing on the most important strategic challenge from Iran, as well as the most persistent and troubling Palestinian problem. He will explain why the latter has no “solution”, outline the realistic options, and discuss in detail the impact of Trump’s “Deal of the Century”. The third lecture will discuss Israel’s encounter with the pandemic, focusing on the deep economic crisis and its profound social and political ramifications, finally suggesting what may offer a way out toward renewed growth and prosperity. The last will examine the complex and constantly mutating relationship between Israel and the Jewish people in the diaspora, focusing on the American Jewish community. This is particularly important now, with reemerging antisemitism, while most of the Jews live in Israel, compared to only 6% at its establishment in 1948.
Dan Schueftan, PhD, is the Director of the International Graduate Program in National Security at the University of Haifa, the Director of the National Security Studies Center at the University (2008-2018), a Visiting Professor (2012-2014) at the Department of Government at Georgetown University in Washington DC and a lecturer at the Israel Defense Forces National Defense College. For the last four decades he has been a consultant to Israeli decision makers and to the top echelon of Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office, Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry, the IDF and The National Security Council.
Since the mid-1970s Dr. Schueftan has been briefing Members and staffers of the US Congress, as well as top professionals and key political appointees in the executive branch. In Europe he has been briefing ministers, parliamentarians, political leaders, senior officers, defense and intelligence officials and government advisors. He regularly lectures at leading universities, research centers and think-tanks in the United States, Europe and East Asia and is a regular source and interviewee on the Middle East for the major media in Israel, the Arab world, Europe, and North America.
Dr. Schueftan has published extensively on contemporary Middle Eastern history, with emphasis on Arab-Israeli relations, Inter-Arab politics and American policy in the Middle East. His books cover a wide variety of topics: A Jordanian Option – Israel, Jordan and the Palestinians (1986); Attrition: Egypt’s Post War Political Strategy 1967-1970 (1989); Disengagement – Israel and the Palestinian Entity (1999). This last book, advocating unilateral disengagement, had a considerable effect on Israeli policy makers. Dr. Schueftan´s recent books are Palestinians in Israel – the Arab Minority and the Jewish State (2011) and The Israel-Arab Reader – A Documentary History of the Middle East Conflict (co-edited with Walter Laqueur, 2016). He is now completing a book about Israel’s national objectives.
